Since 1987, over the years, MAKAM’s owners, Kurt and Chris Barber, have assembled a team of extremely talented and technically knowledgeable construction professionals. Many have been with the company for fifteen years or more.

Kurt A. Barber
President, MAKAM Construction Ltd.
A graduate of BCIT Building Technology, Kurt founded MAKAM Construction Ltd. in 1987. But before setting out on his own, Kurt had already been a project manager and estimator in the local construction business for 10 years. Later, among his many MAKAM projects, Kurt oversaw the complex design/build of the Langley City Fire Hall No.1, and in 2000 he was responsible for supervising the complex 5-phase additions and renovations to the Langley Hospital Emergency Ward.
Chris L. Barber
Vice-President, MAKAM Construction Ltd.
A BCIT Building Technology and Economics graduate, Chris joined his brother Kurt at MAKAM Construction in 1988, but not before spending a few years “outside” working as an estimator and project manager. Since then, Chris has acquired another 24 years’ experience as an Estimator and Project Manager looking after all types of construction projects, Chris has been responsible for a number of commercial and institutional projects in the Lower Mainland.
Tony Ke Liu
Tony joined MAKAM in March 2001. A BS Civil Engineer since 1964, Tony has also worked as a construction supervisor and as an Assistant Professor for the Department of Civil Engineering at Tianjin University in China from 1981-1984. While there, he also taught courses in soil mechanics, foundation engineering, and research into the bearing capacity of pile foundations. In 1984 Tony took courses in geotechnical engineering and conducted research on the effects of interface behavior on dynamic analysis of bridge piers for the University of Oklahoma. In spite of all that, Tony somehow managed to find time to survey and design a new railroad in China. Therefore, accurate estimates, and attention to detail present no problem for MAKAM’s senior estimator.
Previously, with 8 years experience working for a General Contractor/Project Manager, Sharon joined MAKAM in 1997. Her responsibilities include payroll, T-4’s, accounts payable/receivable, government remittances, banking, reception, secretarial and administrative duties , LEED Champion.
Rick comes from a construction family and apprenticed with MAKAM in 1988. He has learned and earned his way up through the construction business to the point where he now supervises the most complex projects. Rick supervises all projects with his good natured calm professionalism.
With 21 years of construction experience, Stuart joined MAKAM in 1991. Stuart has worked as a lead hand and supervised several projects. He has a BC Provincial Carpenters Trade Qualification and First Aid Level 1 qualifications.
Alex has over 22 years of construction experience with approximatley 12 years in a supervisory capacity. Alex has extensive commercial and institutional experience in both new and revovation work. Projects include Building 36 - Granville Island and the Sunset Community Centre in Vancouver.
